Official Course Description:
The course introduces to the analysis of basic classes of numerical algorithms used in scientific computing applications. The core topics will be chosen from the fields of numerical linear algebra, nonlinear systems and optimization, numerical approximation, as well as numerical methods for ordinary and partial differential equations.

Additional Information:
The course is suitable for Mathematics students, as well as for undergraduate and beginning graduate students of other majors or programs with exposure to computational methods and scientific computing applications in the natural sciences, respectively.

The students must hand in a number of homework exercises and programming assignments. The course will not have a Final Exam, but a final project, which must be finished until Dec 7. The final project allows participants to set a focus on either theory or application:
• Theory project: additional reading, further mathematical analysis and pseudo-code implementation of a numerical algorithm;
• Methods project: Derivation, implementation, testing of a more complex model;

The only prerequisite is an introductory course in Numerical Methods such as ESM4A or equivalent basic knowledge (instructor approval necessary). Basic material will be very briefly reviewed as introduction to the slightly more advanced and recent concepts also covered in this course. Since ESM4A has ESM1/2 as prerequisite, it should be clear that familiarity with calculus (including the notion of a differential equation, and multivariate Taylor expansion) and linear algebra is assumed.
