Official Course Description:
This course discusses one or more areas of mathematical modeling of the instructor's choice in-depth.

Past topics have included the Navier--Stokes equations and turbulence, the behavior of liquid crystals, Stefan problems (free boundary
problems as occur in ice-melting), stability of fiber spinning, and crystal growth.

Additional Information:
Mathematics is playing an ever more important role in the physical and biological sciences. The course deals with an introduction to the modeling and simulation of physiological (bio-physical) processes in the human body. The paradigm of "mathematical modeling and simulation" in this field will be discussed and an introduction to real problems in this emerging and rapidly growing interdisciplinary field of applied mathematics will be given. These topics include models for tumor growth and tumor therapy, modeling the heart and circulation, modeling gas exchange in the lungs.
