Official Course Description:
This course is the second in a series of two mandatory courses on Nanomolecular Science which provide a survey of the field, both from a chemical and physical point of view. The course will introduce the principal design of nanomolecular systems, their characteristic physical and chemical properties, principal functions and applications. The focus will lie on organic functional systems and on applications of nanotechnology in the physical sciences, mainly nanoelectronics. It thus complements the inorganic, material-related and methodological aspects covered in Nanomolecular Science I. Nanomolecular Science II is divided into two parts, one tought by a physicist and one by a chemist.

The first part will cover topics such as carbon nanotubes and their electronic applications, single electron transistors, molecular electronics and nanomagnetism, surface functionalization and microfluidics, DNA nanotechnology and biomolecular motors.

The second part will cover the basics of supramolecular chemistry including non-covalent interactions, aspects of experimental investigations of supramolecular systems (NMR and fluorescence spectroscopy), classes of supramolecular receptors (anion, cation and neutral species receptors), logical gates, programmed self-assembly and molecular devices and machines. It will cover natural as well as synthetic systems.
