Official Course Description:
General Mathematics and Computational Science I and II are the introductory
first year courses for students in Mathematics and Applied and Computational Mathematics.
In addition, these courses address anyone with an interest in mathematics and mathematical
modeling. Each semester includes a selection of “pure” and “applied” topics which provide a
solid foundation for further study, convey the pleasure of doing mathematics, and relate mathematical
concepts to real-world applications.
Topics covered in the first semester are:
 Fundamental concepts: sets, relations, functions, equivalence classes.
 Numbers: Peano axioms, proof by induction, construction of integers and rational numbers.
 Discrete Mathematics: combinatorics, binomial coefficients, generating functions, applications
to elementary discrete probability.
 Inequalities: Geometric-arithmetic mean inequalities, Cauchy inequality; Laplace’s method
and Stirling’s approximation.
 Difference equations: linear first order difference equations, nonlinear first order difference
equations, equilibrium points and their stability, linear second order difference
equations; modeling with difference equations.
