Official Course Description:
This course gives a first introduction to number theory. We start of with
some basic calculation skills: calculation modulo p, euclidean algorithm, and Chinese remainder
theorem. We study the multiplicative group modulo an integer n, and work on its
application in cryptography (RSA) and discuss the discrete logarithm problem. Possibly this
is extended to include some more advanced cryptography (like secret sharing cryptography).
Then we proceed with quadratic residues, quadratic reciprocity theorems, and sums of squares.
Naturally, this extends into quadratic forms. We then discuss the p-adic numbers. At some
point during the course, the prime number theorem is covered. If time permits, some extra
covered topics can be: Pell’s equation and continued fractions, Elliptic curves.
The contents of the course can fluctuate a bit and slightly deviate from the above.
